Somalia’s formal induction into the East African Community (EAC) in March 2024 presents the regional bloc with both unprecedented security obligations and opportunities for enduring stability. Admitting a state with Somalia’s precarious conflict situation requires increased coordination between the EAC’s robust economic programs and its relatively untested peacekeeping capacity. Facilitating the EAC’s promise of free cross-border flow of Somali people and goods is an essential precondition for success.
